I started off my fabulous weekend by volunteering at Webster Elementary School’s Carnival Friday night. They were short staffed on volunteers so I invited the 2012 Miss Minnesota Contestants to come and help make the carnival a success. Naturally we are all very busy and live all across the state so only two other contestants were able to volunteer with me at the carnival. My friends Ali Vail (Miss Moorhead) and Caitlyn Thompson (Miss Heart of the Lakes) came and made a difference in these children’s lives. Up until last Friday night these students used to say I was the most famous person they knew, but now they have met two more beautiful and kind princesses. The three of us had a blast visiting with everyone at the carnival. We were even asked to announce the winners of the raffle drawings. Caitlyn and I drew the names out of the bucket and Ali used her amazing big voice to announce the winners. At the end of the carnival we had the opportunity to enjoy some carnival fun ourselves. We went jumping in the blow up jump house and even had snow cones!
On Saturday I spent my day at the North Suburban Women’s Expo. It was amazing to have my own Dance this Weigh booth with so many big name venders. I talked to many women, grandmothers, and community members on how they can be role models for today’s youth. Every mother wants the best for their child and I take pride in being a resource for them to help make healthy decisions for their family. This expo had everything from cooking demonstrations to self-defense lessons. My booth had a great turn out and I loved hearing the attendees input. The most beneficial part of this experience was all of the connections I was able to make with other organizations. These connections will help Dance this Weigh expand further across the state of Minnesota.
I ended such a great weekend with my weekly visit to Gillette Children’s Hospital. It was Bingo week and all of the kids had a wonderful time winning some great prizes. I love going each week and seeing how much these kids grow with their physical mobility. I look forward to seeing all of my Gillette friends each week and love that our relationship keep growing stronger, just like the kids themselves.
Until next time,
Samantha Phillippi
