Where has March gone? I have had such a wonderfully productive month and have had a lot of great appearances in the last two weeks. So to keep everyone in the loop I thought I would write a “catch up” blog. Here we go…
For starters we had a huge celebration for Aubri’s 1st Birthday. I can’t believe my sweet little niece is already a year old and walking. It has been so special watching her grow. She is such a blessing and I don’t know what my family would do without her.
Last weekend my mom and I attended a domestic violence seminar hosted at William Mitchel College of Law. It was a resourceful event where I was able to meet many people and make more connections to support my platform.
On Monday I had a meeting with the executive director of the Dwelling Place, a domestic violence shelter for women. We discussed ways that I can serve their organization and worked on a partnership with my platform. Thank you to my director, Jodi Bostrom, for making such a wonderful connection for my platform. Also, I am also excited to say that because of my connection with the Dwelling Place I am now working with Anna Hurd’s (a victim of domestic violence) mother to organize a candle light walk in honor of Anna and all domestic abuse victims and survivors. More to details to come!
Tuesday afternoon I got to hang out with Victor the Viking and other Vikings friends, including some Viking cheerleaders and Brandon Fusco (#63 a starting offensive line for the Minnesota Vikings) at Playground Design Day. The children were adorable and reminded me a lot of the AT&T “it’s not complicated” commercials. One student even put a magic carpet in her playground design and explained that it would take kids to the top of slides. Another HUGE thank you to Brad Madson, the executive director of community relations for the MN Vikings, for inviting me to be a part of such a fun afternoon.
In a previous blog, I mentioned that I am collaborating with a University of Minnesota doctoral student and women against violence. Things are coming together wonderfully and we now have a name, a performance date, and a venue. Our performance is called Raise Your Voice and will be on Wednesday, April 24th, at the Thrust stage in Rarig. We had our first rehearsal last week and I am so excited to be performing with such talented women.
Lastly, I am very excited to say that after 26 hours of training and shadow shifts I am officially a Tubman Community Advocate. It was a busy night my first shift but I feel like I have gotten the hang of the crisis line and my other roles.
I have had such a marvelous March and I am hoping that April will be just as busy and just as fun!
Until next time,
Samantha Phillippi
