At the Capital today I joined my mother, Tubman volunteers, and many other community members to rally to end violence against women. This event was a collective effort by six statewide coalitions to raise awareness about the impact of violence against women in Minnesota. These coalitions include: Minnesota Indian Women’s Sexual Assault Coalition, Minnesota Coalition for Battered Women, Minnesota Network on Abuse in Later Life, Sacred Hoop Coalition, Minnesota Coalition Against Sexual Assault, and Men’s Action Network.
I met some very strong people. One including a fellow Tubman volunteer who came today with enough courage to share the story of losing her daughter to domestic violence just one year ago. There was a special sense of unity among everyone at the capital. As I carried around my sign that read, “for my sister,” many people smiled at me as if to show they understand. It was powerful to be surrounded by many people who have been affected by domestic abuse in some way and want to make a change.
Until next time,
Samantha Phillippi
