Hello everyone! I have had such a busy and productive week that I wanted to share all of the wonderful things that are happening.
To start, last Saturday I had my photo shoot with Tessie Jones. Before the shoot I had a day of pampering with my Miss Minneapolis board and my mother. We worked on capturing my style through a new hair do and new ways to do my make-up. All of Tessie’s pictures I have seen are awesome and I can’t wait to see how amazing mine will look after Tessie works her camera magic.
Tuesday was a snow day for many schools, including the one that I work at! My dad and I took my niece out for her first play day in the snow. It didn’t seem like she enjoyed the snow that much, I think I had more fun than she did.
It was hard going back to work on Wednesday after the mini snow day vacation but once the work day was over I had my second official meeting for my collaboration with the U of M. We are creating a performance that uses art forms to promote political messages. Our message is against domestic abuse and my contribution is the art form of dance. We are still in creation mode but everything is coming together so well and quickly; we are expecting to be performing by the end of April. This is such a special project and I am honored to be a part of it!
On Thursday after work I had my Tubman crisis line shadow training session. I am a Community Advocate for Tubman and one of my jobs is answering the Crisis Line that is available 24/7. This position means so much to me because I get to serve anyone who asks for my assistance. It was great to shadow other volunteers so I now know how to be successful at my position. Before leaving I also donated some business clothes I never wear to Harriet’s Closet, a program that dresses the women who are getting back on their feet and going to interviews and getting new jobs.
Friday was an extra special day in the Phillippi household because my niece, Aubriella, turned one! I baked pink frosted cupcakes, just like I had done a year ago when she was born. We had a lovely dinner at my grandparents’ house and Aubri ate her first cupcake.
I spent my whole day on Saturday at Tubman training. The actual training process to become a volunteer is an 18 hour course broken down into five sessions. I way so moved by this experience and viewed the whole day of training as life changing. I am excited for my next training session!
Today, I was back at Gillette. I had to take a week off last week to be a judge at the DECA State Conference and I missed seeing all of my young friends. We had such fun playing Minute to Win It games and The Disney Store donated awesome prizes that all of the children loved. I also discovered I have a secret talent of being able to get a cookie from my forehead into my mouth without touching it!
It has been a wonderfully busy week and I have loved every minute of it!
Until next time,
Samantha Phillippi
