Over the last two days KS95 hosted its 14th annual radiothon to support Children's Cancer Research Fund and Gillette Children's Specialty Healthcare. For the past three years I have wanted to volunteer at this event but since I work in an elementary school it was tough to volunteer on weekdays. As a weekly volunteer at Gillette I received an email asking for help and one shift they needed more volunteers for was the early bird shift, 5:00- 7:30am. I was very excited I would finally get to be a part of such a wonderful event.
We started with a little training to learn how to work the phones, what to say to people, and how to record their information. Once we learned what we were doing we were brought to our phones and ready to start. While we were waiting for people to start calling in at such an early hour all of us volunteers talked amongst ourselves and got to know one and other.
The highlight of my day was getting to know the woman sitting next to me and finding out that she is the mother of the man who is marrying my roommate from Miss National Sweetheart. I love moments like these that make the world feel so small and close.
My shift flew by and before I knew it was time to rush to work. It was an inspirational and heartwarming morning experiencing firsthand how generous people can be. I had one man call in to donate $1,000! His name is Daniel and he has three children who all went to Gillette. I was obsessed with listening to KS95 all afternoon and I heard that he called in again and donated another $1,500!! What an exceptionally generous man!
At the end of my shift I would say that my phone alone raised over $2,000. While following the event on facebook I also saw that they made a new record for the largest donation in KS95 for Kids history; someone donated $10,000! The total amount raised this year was $514,094.07, which makes that more than $12 million raised in its 14-year history. I am just overwhelmed with how giving and selfless people can be which really motivates me to do the same, especially this holiday season.
I had such an amazing time and it was wonderful to meet and spend my morning with such nice and caring people. It was great meeting Ryan and Shannon of the KS95 morning show and Dave Dahl. Ryan had me talk on the radio not once, but twice- how awesome! I can’t wait to volunteer again next year, and maybe next time I will get to volunteer for the whole day!
Until next time,
Samantha Phillippi
