Today is what would have been Anna Hurd’s 17th birthday. Anna Hurd was a victim of domestic abuse who devastatingly was murdered by her boyfriend on a snowy February night. She was only 16 years old when her life was stolen from her. In memory of Anna’s Birthday her mother, Jennifer, contacted me to help her plan an event. She had already created a group named Anna’s Hope where she was raising money for The Dwelling Place in Anna’s memory. Jennifer’s goal was to raise $5,000 by Anna’s Birthday (today). She wanted something good to come from such a tragic situation and she wanted Anna's name to resemble beauty and hope rather than sadness.
We planned this event with four other amazing women and I feel it was very successful. The Anna’s Hope event included live music, food and drinks (Pepsi products), a silent auction, purple peace balloon release, and the event ended with a candle light walk. I had wanted to have this candle light walk for a long time and it seemed to be perfect fit for this event. It was a peaceful and unifying way to end such a powerful evening. Summarizing this event into words is very difficult. It was such a meaningful and emotional evening for me, my family, and the family and friends of Anna.
At the event we raised $2,669 making their grand total of $4,285 before today. Because of everyone’s support in wanting to make a positive change, Anna’s Hope exceeded their goal today with a total of $5,055 raised. WOW!!! Thank you everyone for your support in such a LIFE SAVING cause!
A huge thank you to my director Jodi and Pepsi for donanting all of the beverages for our event. Another thank you to North High School for allowing us to use your track for our candle light walk. More thanks to St. Mark’s Church, KSTP, Fox 9, KARE11, Rainbow, and to everyone who came to support a positive change. Last and certainly not least, a very special thank you to NO MORE for sending my family NO MORE t-shirts to wear at this and future events!
Happy Birthday Anna! Prayers and love sent to you!
Until next time,
Samantha Phillippi
