February is Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month. Yesterday I spent the entire day promoting my platform at Tartan High School. Going from my last platform where I taught mainly elementary school children how to be healthy; I was actually pretty intimidated to go speak to high school students about domestic abuse. It was Violence Awareness Week at Tartan so I was very excited to share my message about domestic abuse.
I gave my 50 minute presentation in six different classrooms ranging from a health class to leadership classes even to a criminology class. There was such a high demand for my presentation that I even skipped my lunch break to present to Tartan’s SADD organization. I was extremely surprised how well received my message was. All students were captivated by my message and provided positive conversation throughout my presentation. It was wonderful to hear the thoughts and concerns these teens had on this topic.
After school, Tartan’s SADD organization held an enrichment activity for the high school students to create awareness on domestic abuse in teen relationships. I gave a presentation to an auditorium full of teenagers and was impressed by how attentive everyone was. After I shared my message we watched Reviving Ophelia. I strongly advise all teens to watch this movie! It is an excellent example of different types of abuse and how abuse may look in a teen relationship.
A HUGE thank you to Vicki Kapaun who organized this entire day for me!
Until next time,
Samantha Phillippi
